Interview with the simpatico animator Nina Paley about how her award-winning, feature-length film Sita Sings The Blues is blocked from distribution because of copyright restrictions on music used in the film:

Supporting Movie

Just recently, Paco, with whom I stumbled into the Bolivian civil war some five years back, called me to join a 24-hours non-stop road trip from East to West Germany – on the anniversary of the German reunification. We were accompanied by a neuroscientist who apparently could not decide whether he was from Denver or Leipzig. Three guys in one car along the Autobahn 38 – I felt strong Route 66 vibes coming back.
Have fun with this supporting movie that hits the net just months before The Last Drug is due, our free HD feature film release, coming 2009:

Magix Support - Samplitude

The postman brought Samplitude 10 today and the first thing we did was hacking the dongle.
Just kidding. Actually this was a very nice move from the Magix company: Samplitude was always the tool of choice of Tom, our chief sound designer. Recently I found out, that Magix is quite active as a supporter of certain interesting internet projects, conferences and blogs, so I decided to ask them for help with finish The Last Drug by providing a copy of Samplitude 10 Pro.
One week later we received the complete package - worth more than $1.000. That really helps! Respect to Magix from the VEB Team.

Sam is installed already and waiting to get challenged with Toms 5.1 sound. We will soon shoot a clip showing Tom working on it.

Donation

We received a donation of 1.000 € today from the software developers and IT consultants of tarent GmbH and they also announced further support! Thank you - every Euro allows us to spend a few minutes longer in post production. I met Elmar, one of the two executives of tarent, on several Open Source events - nice guy.

Edit: He just told me that he is currently looking for software developers in Berlin and Bonn.

Dolly-, Crane- and Helicoptershots

Gerald Menzel is the man behind the computer graphics - all the shots that are completely or mostly computer generated.
He built 3D models of the film locations, helped building them in real life, digitized them again and is now creating all shots, that we couldn't shoot on set: a car chase, a surreal sunrise, a superhuge motel sign and 50 others.

must       should       could

Location: Gas Station

Shot: barb-pre_taking_drug_1
[00:09:32] Wide Shot: Gas station and "barb lonely"-sign placed in the dark desert. Only light sources: Cadillac headlights and the sky. Camera is placed where the Mentor is parking (but view is from outside the van).

Shot: barb-stefan-ascend
[00:10:45], [00:23:33] and [00:38:39] Crane Shot: Stefan lying under the "barb lonely"-sign. Only light sources: Cadillac headlights and the sky. Crane moves out.
Shot: barb-cadi-emergency_break_1
[00:20:56] and [00:36:26] Wide Shot, POV Stefan from inside the Cadi: The cadi is avoiding to hit the gas station. Only light sources: Cadillac headlights and the sky.
Shot: barb-cadi-emergency_break_2
[00:21:02] and [00:36:32] Crane Shot from top: The cadi is stopping beside the pump at the gas station after an emergency break. Only light source: Cadi headlights and the sky. Camera from above to see the headlights of the Cadi diving in with the suspension while the Cadi is breaking.
Shot: barb-cadi-emergency_break_3
[00:23:09] The cadi is parking beside the pump at the gas station after the emergency break - a few minutes after the break. Only light source: Cadi headlights and the sky. Same shot as "barb-pre_taking_drug_1" but with trunk closed and Stefan inside the Cadi. Same camera settings to increase recognizability.

Shot: barb-sign-flicker_'ba_b-lone(l)_'
[00:40:31] Helicopter Shot: "Ba b lonel "-Sign; the second "l" is off, glows for a short moment and turns off again. The Cadi is arriving. The electricians car is parked beside the "Ba b lone "-sign. It arrived from north and is parked to be driven to the south. There is a big rhombic electician-logo on the roof.

Shot: barb-sign-flicker_'dead_end'_close
[00:41:26] Close Up: "Dead End" is flickering and then remaining on. Camera is where the Mentor van is parking.

Shot: barb-sign-flicker_'dead_end'_wide
[00:41:34] Wide Shot: "Dead End" still on. Camera is where the Mentor van is parking.

Shot: barb-cadi_leaving1
[00:42:30] Helicopter Shot: "Ba b lone "-Sign; The electricians car is parked beside the "Ba b lone "-sign. "Dead End" is on. The Cadillac is leaving the station.

Shot: barb-station_2
[01:03:05] Helicopter Shot, Wide: down to the station. Long distance. "Ba b lon "-Sign, "Dead End" is on (but maybe to far to be readable). Emphasis is on the direction of the road from north to south, thus the road goes as a vertial line with the station at the center of the picture. Camera is moving up with progressiv speed - very slow at the beginning. Next shot will be the neural network visualisation on the beamer in the labor - the intention is to make a visual link between the gas station and a node in the network.

Shot: sunrise_wide
[01:08:03] and [01:08:21] Wide Shot: Sunrise.

Shot: sunrise_close
[01:08:59] Close Up: Sunrise.

Location: Sign
Shot: barb-sign-flicker_'barb-lonel(y)'
[00:17:19] Wide Shot, POV Stefan: "Barb lonely"-Sign; the "y" flickers and turns off.

Shot: barb-sign-flicker_'ba(r)b-lonel_'
[00:27:01] Wide Shot: "Barb lonel "-Sign; the "r" flickers and turns off. (Camera can be where the Mentor van parks.)

Shot: barb-sign-flicker_'dead_end'
[00:41:15] Wide Shot: "Ba b lone "-Sign: "Dead End" is flickering but not readable. The electricians car is parked beside the sign. Camera is where the Mentor van is parking.
Shot: barb-sign-flicker_'ba_b-lon(e)__'
[01:02:13] "Ba b lone "-Sign: A flash hits the sign everything is dark. The letter "B", "a", "b", "y", "l", "o", "n" turn back on - after a few seconds everything else on the sign turns on. (Message: Babylon, "Gateway of the god(s)" is established. Please make the term "Babylon" recognizable!)

Shot: barb-sign-sunrise
[01:09:20] "Barb lonely" sign at sunrise.

Location: Horizon
Shot: barb-horizon-lightning_1
[00:17:59] POV Stefan: horizon in the south, no lighning

Shot: road-directionsign_south_craneshot
[00:52:12] Crane Shot: A few kilometers north of the gas station. A rhombic road sign stands on the west side of the road. There is a telegraph pole with a rusty megaphone mounted at the top, from which we hear the monologue. The road sign is placed exactly like the sign in the last shot. The crane movement starts after a few seconds and ends at the megaphone. The cadi passes from north to south, towards the gas station.

Shot: barb-directionsign_south
[01:03:01] POV Stefan, Medium Shot Tele: looking to the south at the "S"-Sign on the west side of the road.

Location: Lamp
Shot: barb-lamp
[00:17:52] lamp is flickering

Location: CCTV
Shot: cctv-hallwaypan
[00:55:23] Close Up: Stefan wakes up in front of the surveillance room. Attention is shifting from details of the bed to the monitors. Arriving at the monitors, the shot starts at the lower-left-monitor, shifting to the lower-right-monitor, to the upper-right-monitor, to the upper-left-monitor (always seeing parts of the other monitors). Stefans view is shifting from monitor to monitor during the process of the mentors arrival, making it one single long shot.

Location: Road-Cadi-Composition
Shot: road-cadi-comp1
[00:20:09] and [00:39:12] Dolly Shot: Cadi drives towards the camera as seen in Spielbergs "The Duell" =D

Location: Road-Cadi-Near_Crash
Shot: road-cadi-nearcrash_2
[00:20:58] Wide Shot at Cadi: The cadi is avoiding to hit the gas station and therefor panic-drawing to the right and then correcting to the left again.
Shot: road-cadi-nearcrash
[00:45:29] Several Shots: The cadi is avoiding to hit the telegraph pole.

Location: Road/Race
Shot: road-cadi-driving
[00:25:44] Train/Helicopter Shot at Cadi: Cadi is driving. Camera vehicle is driving/flying parallel to the Cadi at the right side from the cadi. At the beginning of the shot the size of the cadi is matching the toy cadi in the prior shot (try to also match the position and size - could be working).
Shot: road-race_1
[00:34:02] POV Mentor at the Cadi, driving up front. The van of the mentor is closing in.

Shot: road-race_3
[00:34:14], [00:34:25] and [00:42:47], [00:43:59] Wide Shot: Cadi frontal; Mentor starts passing and keeps driving side by side.

Shot: road-race_2
[00:34:33] and [00:44:06] Wide Shot: Camera on the middle of the street. Mentor van and Cadi are passing. + Inside Cadi, POV Stefan: Lightning ahead. + Cadi breaking

Shot: road-race_4
[00:34:40] Helicopter Shot: Mentor van is closing the gap on the Cadi. (There are two shots for this in the actual cut, but one long shot should be better.)

Shot: road-defender
[01:02:06] POV Stefan: The Defender is approaching from the north.

Location: Road-Mentor
Shot: road-mentor-fillin_1
[00:15:19] and [00:35:00] Helicopter Shot: The van of the Mentor is driving on an empty highway.

Shot: road-mentor-POV_to_cadi
[00:15:44] and [00:15:58] POV Mentor at the Cadi, which is driving a few hundert meters up front towards the gas station, where they will arrive in 1 minute (or later).

Shot: road-mentor-stopping_1
[00:16:16] Wide Shot at the van of the mentor which is stopping in a safe distance to observe the gas station. (Suggestion: camera moves out and pans to the right so that the mentor van stays in the left part of the frame and the Cadi, while entering the gas station, is comming into the frame at the right side of the frame - smothly going to the next shot at 16:34 without a cut)
Shot: road-mentor-stopping_2
[00:26:00] Same as "road-mentor-stopping_1" but camera stays at the Mentor van, not showing the Cadi.

Shot: road-mentor-POV_to_gas_station
[00:16:34] and [00:26:13] POV Mentor at the Cadi, which is entering the gas station areal. Inside the van, which is already parking, but headlights still on (if not to time-consuming).

Shot: road-mentor-parking
[00:41:06] Wide Shot Tele, POV Stefan: Mentor van is parking in distance and turning of the headlights.
Shot: road-mentor-driving
[00:25:51] Wide Shot: Stefan is looking at the mirror of the cadi to check who is following. The shot shows a tele shot (POV Stefan) at the mentor van driving behind the cadi.

Location: Stage
Shot: stage-front
Front view of the stage.

Location: Pontiac Cops
Shot: road-pontiac_parking
[00:36:06] POV Martin: the Pontiac is parking on the right side of the road, directly ahead.

Kaleidoscope of Future

Sachtler products are well known among film professionals. On the occasion of their 50 years anniversary they talked to 4 filmmakers about their personal views on the future of film. I was lucky to represent VEB FILM Leipzig as an Pioneer of Open Source.
The article will appear in an anniversary magazine on the NAB - lets see if we get feedback. I was hoping for something like this: "Hello? Mr. Kluge, VEB FILM Leipzig? We would like to pay for your next movie. Yes, we won't influence any creative decisions ... no, of course not ... the story is totally up to you. Sure! You are free to release under free licenses ... We thought about a $5 mio budget? You need 7? All right then. I'll send the check tomorrow."

Donation for „The Last Drug”

We will be active participants in a free culture of connectivity and production, made possible as it never was before by the Internet and digital technology, and we will fight to prevent this new potential from being locked down by corporate and legislative control. If we allow the bottom-up, participatory structure of the Internet to be twisted into a glorified cable TV service — if we allow the established paradigm of creation and distribution to reassert itself — then the window of opportunity opened by the Internet will have been closed, and we will have lost something beautiful, revolutionary, and irretrievable.

The future is in our hands; we must build a technological and cultural movement to defend the digital commons. We release all movies under a Creative Commons License, that allows you to share, remix or reuse them, even commercially. Help us to show other artists that this freedom can work by breaking The Last Drug even:
